I chose Perfect Family on Viki on a whim. I liked the eerie atmosphere of the poster and then the trailer hooked me.
Starting this drama, it seemed so different to what I expected, especially with the initial focus on Seonhui and her school friends rather than whatever is going on with that family, but this drama had me holding my breath as it assembled all the pieces.
I have so much to say about this but I really want people to watch it without any expectations. The way that the writing and the acting and the staging all come together the play with trust and deception are brilliantly effective. So many points through the 12 episodes had me questioning every belief built up by the narrative. The pacing is also immaculate and there isn’t a single storyline that drags the pace to something more boring.
Any time this drama slows down it is to rachet up the tension until you’re certain you can’t even trust what you’re seeing.
Dramas like this, ones I’ve never heard of but can be stumbled upon, really do make for special watching experiences. Though it was the second drama I watched this year, I’m fairly certain it will remain in my top ten for the entire 12 month stretch.
