You Get Me Going

The worst way to talk about something is to describe all the things it is not but, after reading You Get Me Going, I found that the things I loved about this were things that were not typical of BL.

The basic set up is that Go Youngwon is set up on a blind date with his workplace nemesis Kang Hyunwoo. Finding out they’re both gay breaks down the first barrier between them and they go from failed blind date to daring each other to prove they’re good in bed.

Naturally, as they’re endgame, the conventions of BL dictate their physical chemistry is great and they keep on sleeping with each other.

I will warn you that there is a lot of smut in this work, but the occasions the characters meet reveal a lot about Youngwon’s trauma and past experiences which influence who he is now. I really liked the way these two people who didn’t like each other at all at the beginning came around to opening up to each other.

Whereas so much BL relies upon assault as part of the journey towards an apparent relationship, You Get Me Going features abundant consent. In fact there is even a scene when the condom breaks and Hyunwoo stops. He says that Youngwon should bite the dick off anyone who would try to make him have sex without a condom. Of course, this is a pretty smutty webtoon so that is enough to charm Youngwon into asking that they carry on anyway but the thought was there.

I really found that Youngwon and Hyunwoo were on equal footing throughout this webtoon. They had very open and clear discussions about things and I think all the people who hate the miscommunication trope will really like how storyline progress.

Overall this was really enjoyable without moments that I had to I had to unfortunately accept because of the usual ways of BL.
