If you’re anything like me, you’ve been waiting an eternity for the continuation of Sugar Trap. I only heard about it this year and I’ve been chomping at the bit to see where the story will go. This week brought us the first two episodes of Sugar Trap Season 2. I was beyond excited to get into it to see where Sihyun and Joohwan had picked up.
At the end of season 1 I was intrigued by the prospect of Joohwan continuing the pretence of being sexually experienced, even more so when he’d decided to seek some help from his old school friend Jooyoung.
The hints we’d already had that Jooyoung had some sort of interest in Joohwan were delicious. I crave knowledge of that backstory so much and I’m hopeful we will find out about it in the upcoming episodes.
Of course, in these first two episodes of the season, we didn’t get any further clues to that relationship. From Joohwan’s perspective we find out that he really has been forthcoming with tips to tame Sihyun. From Sihyun’s perspective Jooyoung is mentioned as a point of jealousy, just as he had been before. Whether or not a love triangle develops, I think Jooyoung will be important enough for us to require some information about his relationship with Joohwan. That’s great news as Joohwan himself is such an interesting character that it would be great to understand more.
Hardworking and down to earth, Joohwan is just trying his best. Being drawn into dom-sub relationship can’t have been something he expected but he is clearly great at improvising. It doesn’t look as though Sihyun will ever find out his assumptions about Joohwan, uh, “golfing around” being completely wrong.
Sihyun is so tame and obedient in these first two episodes that when he is having his usual thoughts, I forget that’s what he’s like. It’s pretty funny to see how satisfied he is by being told what to do, yet his intense jealousy is also tempered by this aspect of his character. As we saw in season 1 he wants Joohwan enough to do whatever he can to hide their meetings from Joohwan’s (imaginary) partner.
Though this season’s opening hasn’t shown us Sihyun and Joohwan interacting outside of the bedroom, the passage of time within the story must be short enough that Sihyun hasn’t suddenly stopped his speculation about Joohwan sleeping around with every single man in the world. I’m sure we’ll see more of that and I’m curious to see what innocuous conversations Joohwan tries to have get twisted into “oh, so he’ll just sleep with anyone,” and I don’t think I’ll get tired of that either.
The fixation on Joohwan’s ring remains whether or not Joohwan is perceived to be sleeping with lots of other people. There is now also the focus of Min Jooyoung as a rival, though Sihyun hasn’t yet reached the point of wanting to surpass him. We left season 1 with Sihyun just wanting a place in Joohwan’s life (just to have sex though, it’s not as romantic as I’m making it sound), we have started season 2 with Sihyun’s concerns that he and everything he does with Joohwan are temporary, and as season 2 progresses, I’m sure this thought will develop.
I can’t really guess what the outcome will be but I am ready to watch Sihyun’s jealousy unfold in myriad ways. As for Joohwan, he has dealt with things well enough so far. What remains to be seen is how well he copes with the changes.
