I caught this webtoon at a lucky time. Ordinarily I like to read webtoons with a romantic element to them but I gave Sasaeng: Obsessive and Tenacious (SOAT) a go simply because it was free in April. It is currently on Tapas as WUF which, is great, but I don’t think I would have been patient enough to survive reading this one chapter per day.
Choi Deokhee is an idol who accidentally runs over and kills a woman. On his moment of desperation he accepts the convenient help of Jung Yool, a strange man who becomes his manager.
So much is going on here and Deokhee goes through a lot of turmoil as his guilt, fear of losing everything, and the unease Jung Yool sparks in him all congeal into a murky film over the remainder of his life. Considering he intended to turn himself in back when he ran the woman over he has been hounded by a detective and blackmailed by a sasaeng fan who wants to trap him into a marriage.
I know that hearing a work has twists can ruin things for some people but there’s no way you can describe this work without highlighting the many twists and turns the story takes. At no point did I expect what was coming next and at no point did these unexpected occurrences feel impossible within the world built up around Deokhee. He’s more than just unlucky, he’s a magnet for disaster and I needed to see him survive it all.
The introduction of fellow idol Siyu adds a new perspective to things and we see that, whilst she hasn’t been baited into rake after rake like a metaphysical Sideshow Bob, her life as a celebrity isn’t so great either. I really loved her character and the ideas she introduces and represents but I hate how revealing anything about her ahead of time would detract from her own story.
If you’re patient, you can give WUF a try with this one but I’m pretty sure that once you start you’ll be spending ink to find out wherever SOAT can possibly take you next!
