Once again, I gave Lovers, Cats, and the Killer a chance because I had some free coins. It’s funny, in a way, having such great expectations about the cats in the story seeing as they’re highlighted in the English title. I’m sure if I was led to this work by the Korean title “Re:meet” I would probably have been annoyed at all the focus on the cats whilst expecting something else. The fact of the matter is, both “Lovers, Cats, and the Killer” and “Re:meet” offer equally important perspectives of the same work.
The groundwork for the mystery surrounding the missing/murdered cats is lain very well in my opinion. On my initial readthrough, the same could not be said for the BL aspects. You might point out that the standoffish behaviour of their first couple of meetings was simply the set up of a classic ‘enemies’ to lovers but there’s nothing strong enough to justify that line of thinking.
The long and short of it is, I really love this webtoon, however the title really had a strong bearing on my opinions. Because of the title emphasising three aspects of the story, I had higher hopes for the first thing in the list. Looking at this as though it was called Re:meet, on the other hand, makes it much easier to take the ambiguity around Mooyoon and Taeyi’s early interactions.
I know that complaining about the title is pointless but it really strongly coloured my thoughts for the first fifteen or so episodes. After the first section was complete the story really started to get underway. The entire atmosphere shifted into something more viscous and enthralling.
Combining a crime thriller(?) with supernatural elements and the disarmingly fluffy cats really made for a unique reading experience. I would also recommend a second readthrough too, but I really doubt it would take all that much convincing to want to do that.
