  • In the Hall of the Mountain King | Nili Recommends

In the Hall of the Mountain King had a really peaceful feeling historical atmosphere for me as a reader. I suppose considering it is the aftermath of some war or other it is meant to have a more stilted and awkward atmosphere but I couldn’t help but enjoy the whole thing.

Eve(rard) is the third son of some bad guy lord who sells him off as the bride of Marquis Oderic as part of a surrender agreement. Lady Eve (as he is officially known) grew up in a monastery since he was a child and was suddenly sent to be the bride of a widower.

Eve doesn’t take well to his new role but he tries his best.

The art style is really pretty and fits well with the story itself. There are only rare instances of colour and the black and white drawings remind me of the illustrations in old books. This styling adds to the careful and distant relationship between the main characters.

I am going to spoil something because it is driving me crazy, but Everard was sent to the monastery when he was 10 and lived there for over twenty years. He’s older than Marquis Oderic! Even the little explainer that through fudged paperwork for this marriage he’s pretending to be a couple of years younger than the marquis baffled me. I thought this guy was meant to be like 20 or something. I guess his naivety and inexperience in his role as a noble make sense considering how he grew up, but now I realise I was not sad enough whilst reading this story!

I will say, I’m pretty upset with the ending — in the sense that I hate that this story had to end at all! I really hope to see more from Dol soon because I need to be able to escape into one of their worlds again soon!

  • 탑알바입니다 (I’m A Top Part-timer)

I just caught up on reading this webtoon and now I don’t know what to do!

So, I wanted to try reading something in Korean and when I saw this I think 17 episodes or so had been uploaded. It wasn’t the first time I’ve tried reading a webtoon in its original language, but it is the first time I have successfully read up until the most recent update. And, with some heavy lifting from Naver Dictionary when I forgot the same words over and over, I must say it has been a really enjoyable read so far.

  • Debut or Die!|Webtoon and Webnovel

When it comes to this blog I’m almost 4 months behind with my updates (on account of the fact I’ve been journalling media since the beginning of the year and only started this blog in April time). However, this month Debut or Die! has consumed my life to the extent that I absolutely must talk about it right now or else I’ll… Die!

  • Lovers, Cats, and the Killer

Once again, I gave Lovers, Cats, and the Killer a chance because I had some free coins. It’s funny, in a way, having such great expectations about the cats in the story seeing as they’re highlighted in the English title. I’m sure if I was led to this work by the Korean title “Re:meet” I would probably have been annoyed at all the focus on the cats whilst expecting something else. The fact of the matter is, both “Lovers, Cats, and the Killer” and “Re:meet” offer equally important perspectives of the same work.

  • On the Contrary

At 3 chapters for the main story and 2 side chapters this was incredibly short and sweet. Within the 3 main episodes the artist brought out the gorgeous high school romance so well.

  • Sasaeng: Obsessive and Tenacious

I caught this webtoon at a lucky time. Ordinarily I like to read webtoons with a romantic element to them but I gave Sasaeng: Obsessive and Tenacious (SOAT) a go simply because it was free in April. It is currently on Tapas as WUF which, is great, but I don’t think I would have been patient enough to survive reading this one chapter per day.
